Apollo

I heard something the other day that shocked me to my core. I was attending an onsite meeting with a number of my co-workers and we were shooting the breeze after a team lunch.

We were talking about something, I don’t remember what, and I mentioned my Grandmother and how she lived during an amazing time. She was born when transportation was horse and buggy and lived to see men walk on the moon. This elicited questions from the team about the moon landings being real or not. I thought they were joking, but they weren’t. This was so shocking to hear that I didn’t really have a response. In the end, there was only one other person at the table that had no doubt the moon landings were real.

What has happened? Why do people choose to believe a rumor, a conspiracy, with a couple of photos or whatever that the rumor says are fake and totally ignore the hundreds of thousands of people that were part of the space program and the mountains of data that exist on a program that lasted many years from Mercury to Gemini and finally Apollo. There were many space flights across all those programs with tons (literally) of data collected for each one of those missions including six missions to the moon.

My first question to “them” is why they think this was all faked and why they think we couldn’t go to the moon? After all, like the phones they all hold in their hands today, it was math, science, engineering, hard work and many dedicated, brilliant people that did both. Obviously the moon landings were on a whole other level but what it took to achieve those landings were what I mentioned above. That and a President and country with a vision and will to see the project through.

I’m not going to spend the time “proving” the moon landings. If folks have enough time and energy to find the rumors that say it’s fake, they have enough time as well to find the overwhelming facts on the subject as well. I will leave this one link on the Saturn V. That would be the rocket that carried the astronauts to the moon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUUhD-XTxhQ.

I grew up during the space program years and although I was young, I still remember watching every Apollo mission on TV. I remember the feelings I had seeing these events. I was just one of millions, if not billions, across the world that had those same feelings. I am a witness to these events.

Finally, this was one of the greatest achievements that this country has ever had. One that didn’t involve killing people. Instead this was one that brought people hope and allowed them to look up at the stars and know we could travel there and expand our minds and understanding and realize that we all live on this little blue dot called Earth.
