I’ve watched the first two episodes of Extrapolations, a new show on Apple TV. It is basically what it says it is, extrapolations of the data of how this planet is changing and how man affects it and where it could be going in the very near future. The scary part is, I wonder just how close it may end up being?
I talk to folks across the country on an almost daily basis and they all talk about how the weather has changed, how people have changed, how the world has changed. Just daily conversations.
But then, I read the news and see and hear folks say nothing has changed, there is nothing we need to worry about, we don’t need to protect this or conserve that, everything is just fine. It’s all a bunch of bull from politics or politicians or the other party or folks that don’t look like me or whatever. The thing is, I sometimes hear those things from the same folks that talk about the weather and how everything is changing.
Damnit, we all know things are changing, it is happening right in front of our eyes! We only have to open them and look! War, plastic everywhere, forests being cut down or burned up, animals going extinct, honeybees for example. If they die off, how do we pollinate our crops? Nothing to worry about, right? Pollution, bad drinking water, glaciers melting, too much moisture, too little moisture. Horrible storms, earthquakes, oil spills, burning coal, making more and more and more things, over population, hate, toxic waste, toxic chemicals, toxic people, weapons of mass destruction, pandemics, racism, classism, rumors, ignoring history, greed.
All these are happening and seem to be happening at a greater rate. Some are human caused and some are caused by nature. A lot we can fix and some we can’t. The choice is ours.
Our home, the only home we all have, is this little blue dot that we don’t seem to want to share with one another and we want to destroy just about any way we can think of. We don’t want to believe any of this is happening and want to blame others for “it”, whatever “it” may be.
With all that said, is there a way to change, a way to fix things? Sure. If we all just changed three basic things, we could all change the world, together. My fear though, being humans, we’ll never do it.
Treat everyone like you want to be treated, accept responsibility for what humans, WE, I, do and have done and fix it and finally, forget greed (corporate or personal) and the “I’m gonna get mine” attitude and instead share and use and have no more than you need.
If all of us could do just those three things, there’s a chance we could avoid what Extrapolations is showing us about what our future may be.
It all starts with me…
