MacBook Pro 16 inch
I recently purchased the new 16 inch MacBook Pro and wanted to pass on a few thoughts. I purchased the build to order 2.4 GHz, 8 core version with the 1gb SSD, 32 gb of ram and the upgraded AMD Radeon Pro5500M with 8gb of ram, video card.
Without a doubt, this is a fast computer. It will handle Xcode development without breaking a sweat. Video and photo editing are also fast and easy on this machine. Exactly what one would expect with these specifications.
What made a positive difference though were the nonperformance items. Things like running cooler and a little more screen space and much better sound and battery life.
Then, for me at least, there is the not so good. A third more of a pound isn’t so good but probably a worthwhile trade off with the increase in better battery life and screen size.
Finally, the keyboard. Me, I like the keyboard that has been on Mac laptops the last few years. I like it a lot. I have a light touch when it comes to typing so the short travel feels good and feels precise. Especially compared to the earlier versions of the MacBook Pro.
The new keyboard has gained back some of the mushiness and lost a little of the precision. It is more like the Magic Keyboard that comes with Mac desktops. Thus the name! They are all good, just not quite as precise as I would like.
I’ve never had an issue with any Mac keyboard so I can’t speak to the reliability issues other than to note that I’ve never had any. Your results may vary.
Bottom line, would I recommend the 16 inch MacBook Pro. If you need the power or screen area, then I would highly recommended it. If you don’t, and don’t mind the keyboard, the 13 inch MacBook Pro is probably a better all around computer due to its lower price and smaller size.
